Vita Mahjong Special Tiles
Vita Mahjong boards can include hidden faces, mystery tiles, event tiles, flowers and seasons. Some reveal information differently; others have matching rules that differ from an exact-picture pair. Check the tile’s role before spending a hint or risking a combo.
Start with ordinary matching tiles
Bamboo, circles or coins, characters and other ordinary designs need an identical matching face. Animal and character artwork follows the same exact-match rule when used as a normal tile set. Both tiles still need to be free.
The theme section changes tile artwork and the table background. A different background or drawing does not normally change which ordinary faces match. Look closely at numbers and small strokes; two similar bamboo tiles are not necessarily the same tile.
Hidden faces and mystery tiles
A hidden tile conceals its face until you tap or press it to reveal the picture briefly. Remember that picture and find its free partner. A mystery tile has a particular partner elsewhere on the board; identify it before removing nearby pairs that may be needed to reach it.
These features are more common in Journey and themed boards than in the earliest ordinary levels. The labels here describe their behavior; event names and translated interface labels may change.
| Tile or effect | How to handle it |
|---|---|
| Hidden face | Tap or hold to reveal, then match the exposed picture with its free partner. |
| Mystery tile | Find its specific partner on the board. |
| Challenge tile | The event item is collected when its matching action is completed and contributes event points. |
| Journey tile | Clear the relevant marked tile as part of the Journey objective. |
| Shooting Star | With Auto Match enabled, the effect removes a random free pair. |
| Flower or season | Match within the same special group, not across the two groups. |
Challenge and Journey tiles have different jobs
A themed challenge adds items associated with its current theme. Completing the relevant pair collects the challenge item and adds its points; you do not need a separate tap to collect it afterward. Journey uses the current weekly theme, with marked tiles that you deliberately clear to satisfy that board’s objective.
See mode objectives and leaderboards for the reward context. Auto Match can produce a Shooting Star that removes a random legal pair. It assists play; it is not a guarantee that the app will solve every board while unattended.
Flowers match flowers; seasons match seasons
The four flower tiles form a matching group, and the four season tiles form another. Two different flowers can match each other; two different seasons can match each other. A flower does not match a season simply because both are special.
This flexibility can make an exposed flower or season pair useful for opening a stack. Compare what the pair reveals before taking it. The rule does not apply to differently numbered bamboo tiles or unrelated character tiles: ordinary faces still require an exact match.
Special tiles still need to be free
A special picture does not bypass the blocking rule. An invalid tap can interrupt a combo just as it does on an ordinary tile. A hint does not break the combo, so use it when a legitimate match is hard to see rather than tapping at random.
Long runs produce the super-combo effects described in the game. The controls and combo guide explains why checking both tiles before touching them is more useful than racing the animations.
Inspect a partly covered face
The documented app interaction lets you press an upper tile and move it slightly aside to peek at the face beneath. This is an inspection gesture, not permission to take a tile that remains covered. If that gesture is not available in your installed version, plan from the visible faces and reveal the lower layer normally.
Auto Match and Multiple Match can also act on eligible special tiles; the applicable event collection is handled with the match. A themed challenge may be named for a panda or the character fu, while individual boards can have their own names. Those names change between releases and are not permanent level identifiers.
For dense layouts, see pair-selection tips. The Mah browser game offers similar matching practice but does not reproduce all of the mobile app’s event tiles.
Frequently asked questions
What is a tile with a hidden picture?
A tile whose face appears briefly after a tap or press. Remember it and find its matching free partner.
How do I collect a challenge tile?
Complete the corresponding match. The challenge item is collected with that action and contributes to the current event; a separate collection tap is not needed.
What does the Shooting Star do?
With Auto Match enabled in the documented version, it removes a random free pair.
Are flowers and seasons special tiles?
Yes. A flower can match another of the four flowers; a season can match another of the four seasons. Do not match across the two groups.
What breaks a combo on a special tile?
An invalid tap on a blocked tile. A special picture does not make it free, and using a hint does not break the run.
Can I see a tile covered by another?
The documented press-and-slight-drag gesture on the upper tile reveals part of the face below. It does not make the lower tile legally removable while covered.
